Derek Mummert was officially confirmed as the new Director of the Gadsden-Etowah Emergency Management Agency in July of 2023. Mummert. Mr. Mummert started his career in public service over 15 years ago by joining his local volunteer fire department. Shortly after he joined the Georgia Department of Corrections where he served at Walker State prison, a medium security prison as a Correctional Officer, before moving to Jackson, GA working at the Diagnostic and Classification prison. Derek has taken multiple classes for training and certification, including the POST Instructor Training.
In 2013, he moved to Alabama and met his wife Kimberly, and in 2016 he was blessed with twins, Kieley and Declan. He continued his career in the private sector before joining the city of Gadsden as an Emergency Management Specialist with the Gadsden/Etowah County EMA in November of 2022. During his time there he has gained over 600 hours of training, including FEMA Instructor Training, All Hazards Communications Technician, All Hazards Incident Management Team, and All Hazards Incident Commander. He has been apart of the Emergency Operations Center for the World Games in Birmingham, and Hydrofest in Guntersville.
In July of 2023 he offered the position of Director for the Gadsden/Etowah County EMA, which he accepted with gratitude.
